NFL - National Football League

The National Football League, or NFL, is the most famous American football league on the planet, thanks in no small part to its annual Super Bowl game. It can trace its origin back to the American Professional Football Association, which was formed in September 1920 and rebranded itself as the National Football League in June 1922. Interestingly, the Super Bowl itself wasn’t played until January 1967, almost 55 years after that NFL rebranding.

Today there are 32 professional American football teams that play in the NFL, and almost all of them include their home city in their names, to the point that most sports fans can’t even say Miami, New England or Dallas without thinking of the Dolphins, Patriots or Cowboys, respectively.

When does NFL start?

The NFL pre-season starts in early August and runs for four weeks, during which time each team plays four games, the outcomes of which have no bearing on their standings for competition purposes. The main season then begins in September and runs for 17 weeks, with each team playing 16 games. That is followed by the NFL Playoffs, which sees 14 teams compete to avoid elimination. The two teams that successfully survive the playoffs go head-to-head in the climax of the NFL competition, the Super Bowl.

Most super bowl wins

The Green Bay Packers hold the accolade of being the most successful team in the NFL as far as titles are concerned, with a record 13 titles and 4 Super Bowl wins. The record for the highest number of Super Bowl wins is shared by the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New England Patriots, with both teams winning the game 6 times.

Having been around for just over a century, it hasn’t been difficult for the NFL to produce plenty of star athletes, many of whom have become household names. Tom Brady and Dan Marino are obvious examples.
